Stone Block is a trompe l'oeil, and a convincing one. The paper reproduces coursed ashlar, with regular blocks, fine mortar joints and the faint variation of face and weathering across each stone, at a scale that reads correctly on a domestic wall. It is one of the older prints in the historic catalogue and has stayed in production because the drawing is accurate.

What makes it work is restraint in the tonal range. The blocks differ from one another only slightly, so the wall reads as masonry rather than as a pattern of rectangles, and the joints are drawn thin enough to disappear at a few paces. Under directional light the illusion strengthens; under flat light it settles into a quiet textured plain. The block size is judged carefully as well, large enough to read as building stone rather than brick, small enough not to dwarf a domestic room.

A 64 cm straight repeat aligns the courses across the wall, which is essential to the illusion, so a wall that is out of true is worth checking before hanging. It is at its best where masonry would plausibly be: a garden room, a basement kitchen, a cloakroom, a hall. Against real stone flooring and plain joinery it stops being a joke and becomes architecture.
