Strawberry began as a hand-block print of the 1840s, and its structure belongs to that period: a small motif of fruit and flower repeated on a regular grid, spaced so tightly and evenly that the design behaves as a geometric while remaining entirely botanical. Nineteenth-century printers understood this trick well.
The drawing is delicate, a strawberry, a five-petalled flower and a few leaves, and the uniformity of the repeat is what makes it work at scale. There is no directional emphasis and no focal point, so the paper covers a wall evenly and reads as texture from a few paces. Printed on a non-woven ground, it hangs flat and holds its line. Hand-block printing produced patterns like this by necessity, since the block itself sets the grid, and the discipline still shows.
Colour is soft, playing to the pastoral origin rather than the graphic structure, and the range runs from clear pastels to deeper saturated grounds with one carrying a metallic pass. Small-scale non-directional papers of this kind are the most useful in a house: a bedroom, a bathroom, a passage, the inside of a wardrobe, or a room already full of furniture that needs a wall behind it rather than a competing pattern. It is also the sort of paper that can be used in two adjoining rooms without becoming repetitive.
