Cole & Son | Textures - Paperweave

Paperweave takes fine strips of paper and weaves them into a cloth-like surface, producing something closer to a matting than to a printed ground. The result is more regular than grasscloth and slightly crisper in its rhythm, with a fine grid that catches light along one axis and absorbs it along the other.

Cole & Son include it as a plain to set beside the collection's scenic flora and Japanese woods designs, and the pairing makes sense: a woven ground gives a printed scene a place to stop. On its own it is an unusually calm wallcovering, closer in feel to a lining of natural matting than to wallpaper, and it takes to raking light from a window or a wall light particularly well.

It comes on a 0.7 m by 8 m roll with a straight match. Seams remain part of the character of a woven wallcovering, so it repays being hung by someone who plans the drops around the room rather than starting at a corner and working round. It suits a dressing room, a landing, a bedroom, or the walls of a room where a strong floor or a heavy curtain is already carrying the scheme and the walls are meant to hold their peace.
