The thistle is the least sentimental of the British flowers, and this design keeps that quality. The plant is drawn for its structure rather than its prettiness, with spined bracts, a tight rosette bursting open at the crown, and stems that hold themselves stiffly rather than curving, set into a bold trailing repeat that climbs the wall in long diagonals.
Cole & Son have printed it to behave like a screen print, with a chalky matte surface and a slight thickness to the pigment where one colour sits over another. That finish matters. It takes the shine out of the paper entirely, so the brittle geometry of the flower head reads sharply and the ground stays flat and papery. Close to, the small registration shifts of screen printing are visible; at a distance the design resolves into a confident, open trail.
The scale is generous enough to carry a whole room without crowding it, which makes Thistle a better proposition in a hall, a stair or a bedroom than as a single decorated wall. It belongs with painted joinery and plain wool or linen, and sits comfortably in a farmhouse and a London flat alike. The drawing is graphic enough to avoid any suggestion of the country-cottage pastiche the subject might otherwise invite.
