Tile is a small-scale geometric drawn down to almost nothing: a repeated interlocking motif, evenly spaced, with no hierarchy and no focal point. Designs of this kind are among the hardest to get right, because at close range they must hold a clean line and at distance they must resolve into an even tone without flickering. This one does both.
The reference is ceramic, the modular logic of a tiled floor or a glazed wall, but the drawing is modern and spare, and the effect is closer to a textile than to tilework. Several colourways set a metallic over a matte ground, which introduces a low shift of light as you move past; the flat colourings read more architectural and sit quietly behind pictures and furniture.
Its usefulness is in that restraint. A small repeat gives a room grain without asking for attention, so Tile takes on the jobs a plain cannot: a cloakroom that needs some incident, a back hall, the inside of a cupboard, a small bedroom, a stair connecting two more decorated floors. Paired with a strong colour on the woodwork it holds its own; paired with a large-scale pattern elsewhere it recedes, which is generally what a small geometric is for.
