Topiary is a design about the shapes gardeners cut rather than about plants themselves. The formal garden, its knots, parterres and clipped labyrinths, is drawn here as a bold ordered geometry and then softened by the hand that painted it. The Cole & Son studio worked it in watercolour, and the medium is entirely visible: edges bleed, tones pool and separate, and the colour is laid in washes rather than as flat areas.

The result is a pattern that behaves in two ways at once. Structurally it is geometric and repetitive, which gives a wall order. In surface it is loose and atmospheric, which stops the order becoming rigid. Very few papers manage that combination, and most formal garden designs go stiff.

The roll is a narrow 0.52 m, often an advantage in an older house, where narrow drops are easier to work around out-of-true walls and awkward returns. It is a straight match with a 76.2 cm repeat, so the parterre lines up cleanly across a run and the geometry reads as intended. It suits a garden room, a dining room, a hall with a stone floor, rooms with a relationship to the outside, and looks best where the furniture is plain enough to let the pattern be the ornament.
