Pomona was the Roman goddess of the harvest and of fruitful abundance, and the design named for her is a full cornucopia of fruits and orchard vines drawn in the Arts and Crafts manner. That means flattened forms, strong outlines, and a pattern built from the honest repetition of a drawn unit rather than from illusion, a celebration of nature and of traditional craftsmanship in equal measure.
Everything in it is worked to the same weight. Fruit, leaf, stem and tendril are given equal attention, which is characteristic of the tradition and is why designs of this school hold together so well across a large wall: there is no focal point to exhaust. The repeat is 64 cm on a 0.52 m roll, a comfortable scale, large enough to be architectural and small enough not to need a great expanse to make sense.
It hangs with a half drop, offsetting each length by half the repeat so the vines interlock across the drops rather than forming rows. Vines of Pomona belongs in a dining room, a study, a hall or a bedroom with reasonable ceiling height, and it takes very naturally to oak, rush seating, brass and plain wool. It is one of those papers that makes a modern house feel older and an old house feel properly finished.
