Cole & Son | Woodland

Woodland is a large design about depth: the layering of a wood seen from inside it, where the canopy closes overhead and light comes through in patches rather than evenly. The Cole & Son studio have built it as a tapestry rather than as a scene, weaving familiar woodland themes into one another across the full height of the wall, with no clearing and no horizon to break the density.

At 122.6 cm the repeat is long, and the drawing takes full advantage of it. Foliage builds from the skirting to well above head height before the pattern begins again, so the wall reads as continuous rather than as a repeated unit. The detail is dense enough that creatures are found rather than seen, which is what makes a paper like this hold interest over years.

The roll is a wide 0.7 m, which reduces the number of joins across a wall, a real advantage on a design this busy. It hangs with a half drop, offsetting alternate lengths by half the repeat so the canopy interlocks across the drops and the seams disappear into the foliage. It suits an enclosed room where the pattern can meet in the corners: a dining room, a study, a stair, or a bedroom with the pattern running behind the bed rather than facing it.
