Woods & Stars adds a sky to a design that never had one. The birch print gave only trunks and branches, with nothing above them. Here stars are scattered through the upper reaches, and the effect is to turn a graphic pattern into a scene: the same wood, but at night, and seen by someone looking up.
It is a small addition, and the restraint is deliberate. The stars are scattered rather than arranged, they vary in size, and there are enough of them to establish a night sky without turning the wall into a constellation chart. The trunks remain exactly as they were, so the vertical rhythm that makes the original work is untouched.
What this does to a room is change its register. Where the original reads as modern and graphic, Woods & Stars reads as narrative, and it is consequently a natural choice for a child's room, an attic bedroom, a stair, or any small room that benefits from being slightly enchanted. It is not only a children's paper, though. In a darker colourway with good joinery and low lamps it works perfectly well in a study or a snug, where the stars simply read as points of light in a dark field.
