Cole & Son's Woods print, the 1959 silver birch design that has become the house's most recognisable, made up here as a finished cushion in the same premium linen union used for the fabric by the metre. It is the smallest possible way to bring the design into a room, and in a scheme that already has enough going on it is often the right one.
The cloth is a linen face over a cotton back, firm and slightly textured, with the linen slub visible in the surface. The piping is cut from the Woods fabric itself rather than from a contrast, so the trunks continue round the edge of the cushion and the whole thing reads as one piece rather than as a print with a border. At 50 cm square it is a generous size, the sort that furnishes the corner of a large sofa or sits properly against the arm of a deep chair.
The inner is feather and down, which is the difference between a cushion that holds a shape and one that collapses; it can be dressed by hand and it stays dressed. It is handmade in Great Britain, and coordinating wallpaper and fabric are available, so it can be the whole reference to Woods in a room or the beginning of a larger one.
