This is a hand-formed clay water pot, the kind of object that brings a room back to something made by hand rather than machined. The surface carries the marks of its making, slight irregularities in the clay body and a form that is close to but never quite symmetrical, which is exactly what gives it presence on a shelf or table. It is a piece we bring into a scheme when everything else has become a little too finished and needs one honest object to sit against.

As with the rest of de Le Cuona's African-sourced accessories, the pot is worked by hand from clay, and its finish and colour will vary slightly piece to piece, which we treat as part of the value rather than an inconsistency to correct. It is a single, freestanding vessel rather than a set, so each one bought is its own object.

We use this pot on a low coffee table where its rounded form can be seen from a seated position, grouped with books and a single stem in a plain glass, or on an open shelf where its shape reads clearly against a plain wall. It sits well next to woven baskets, aged wood or plain linen, and we would keep other decorative objects nearby simple, so the pot's texture is not competing with anything busy.

Handle the pot as you would any hand-formed clay object: lift from the base rather than the rim, keep it away from direct water use since it is decorative rather than functional pottery, and dust rather than wash the surface to protect the clay finish. If placing on a polished or delicate surface, we would add a felt pad beneath the base to prevent scratching.
