Banquet is a short-pile cotton velvet, brushed and cut repeatedly in finishing, which is what gives it an even surface and a soft, malleable handle rather than the stiffness of a heavier pile. At 35,000 rubs it is sound for everyday upholstery, a sofa, a headboard or dining chairs, and at 550 g per metre it still drapes, so the same cloth can run as curtains in one scheme. Velvet takes light directionally: run the pile the same way on every piece and check the direction before cutting, or two chairs from the same roll will read as two colours.
