Mokhoro Stripe is a linen cloth with a vertical stripe, and in Burnt Umber the colour is a warm, earthy brown with a hint of rust. The stripe is relaxed rather than ruled, so the cloth keeps the slightly uneven, hand-woven quality that linen does well. It draws the eye upwards and gives a plain room some structure without any decoration, and the warmth of the colour means it sits comfortably against both pale and dark walls.
The cloth is 95% linen with 5% polyamide, 135 cm wide, and carries a vertical repeat of 58 cm. It has a Martindale rating of 30,000 rubs, which is generous for a linen and puts it well within the range we are happy to use on upholstery that gets regular use as well as on curtains. It is a de Le Cuona cloth, and we sell it by the half metre, so you can order exactly what the job needs and a little over.
We would use Burnt Umber for curtains in a sitting room or bedroom, hung to the floor with a generous fullness so the stripe gathers softly. It also works on a dining chair seat, a banquette or a deep armchair where you want warmth without a heavy pattern. We would pair it with oatmeal or stone plains, a chalky off-white wall, and natural materials such as oak, rattan and unglazed ceramic.
With a 58 cm repeat, plan your cutting carefully. Stripes must run true and straight, so ask your workroom to match every drop and to align the stripe at each seam. Order extra for matching, particularly if you are railroading or covering several pieces. We would line and interline curtains in this cloth to help the linen hang cleanly and protect the colour from sun.
