Strata is a made-up cushion with a fringe detail, and it works on the principle that a plain shape can carry a great deal of interest if the edge is considered. The fringe gives the cushion a soft, tactile border and a little movement when it is picked up or knocked, so it never sits quite as stiffly as a flat, piped cushion does. In Pampas the colour is a muted, dry tone, close to the pale gold of grass in late summer.
The cushion is 55 cm wide, a generous square that fills the corner of a sofa without looking lost. It is sold individually, so it is easy to add a single piece to a seating arrangement or to build up a group of several. We do not have a composition to quote for this piece, so we would ask you to enquire if the fibre content matters for your project, for instance where a client has a particular sensitivity or a care requirement.
We tend to use a cushion like this to break up a run of plain upholstery. On a sofa in a deep, dark linen it brings a lighter note, and on a pale bed it adds depth against white linen sheets. We would put one or two at the ends of a sofa and one in the centre of an armchair, rather than lining up a row. It pairs well with a plain cushion in a nearby tone, so the fringe is the only variation in the group.
A cushion with a fringe asks for slightly more care than a plain one. We would plump it by hand and avoid pressing the fringe flat, and it is worth brushing the edge gently with your fingers from time to time to keep it lying evenly. Keep it out of strong direct sun to protect the colour, and fluff it regularly so the filling does not settle. Turn it occasionally so that wear is spread across both faces.
