This Ad Astra puts the abstract line work on Didgeridoo, a textural raffia ground with a dry, papery hand and a natural lustre. Over fifty thousand cord embroidery stitches build the motif into a pronounced relief, so the lines are not drawn on the surface so much as constructed above it. Because the stitching is worked in a single fibre, the greens are played against each other by depth of tone rather than by contrast of material, and the piece shifts noticeably as the light moves across it.

Made in Italy. The ground is 59 per cent polyamide and 41 per cent linen; the cord embroidery is 100 per cent polyester. Tested at 10,000 rubs on the Martindale scale, which places it firmly as a decorative piece, the cushion measures 68 by 90 centimetres. One colourway, 001 Ivory / Green, running from a vivid to a deep green across the raffia ground.

We use it on a linen sofa in a garden room, on a cane or rush chair, and at the end of a bed in a green-and-cream scheme. It sits well with oatmeal linen, natural matting and unpolished oak, and we would not add a second pattern anywhere near it in the group. The line work is directional and set off-centre, so which way the panel goes is a decision worth making when you order. Raised cord embroidery catches easily and the low rub count confirms it: keep this one on a chair back or a bed rather than under daily use, and brush the surface along the stitching.
