Ad Astra is an embroidered cushion whose motif is a set of essential lines that set off in an unexpected direction, an abstract reading of a night sky. More than fifty thousand cordonnet stitches build the pattern in relief, with a thread of silver worked through it, over Millais, a matt and slightly mottled linen and wool ground. The contours are clean-cut rather than soft, so the piece has a drawn, tailored quality that the woolly ground then takes the hardness out of.
Made in Italy. The ground is 66 per cent virgin wool, 21 per cent linen and 13 per cent polyamide; the cordonnet is 60 per cent polypropylene, 36 per cent polyester, 2 per cent metallic polyester, 1 per cent polyamide and 1 per cent paper. Rated at 45,000 rubs on the Martindale scale, the cushion measures 70 by 90 centimetres. Three colourways: 001 Ivory, 002 Grey / Metal and 003 Notturno, the darkest of the three.
We use it on a wool sofa, on a bedroom chair, or as a single piece on a bench at the end of a bed. Notturno suits a dark room with lamplight; Ivory and Grey / Metal sit more easily in daylight against stone, oak and pale plaster. Sold individually; made to order in Italy, so allow a few weeks.
The lines are directional and placed off-centre, so the panel can be turned to suit the piece it sits on; agree that when you order. Raised cordonnet will catch on a watch or a zip, so it is better on a chair back than under an elbow, and dust should be brushed along the line of the stitch. Made to order in Italy and not returnable.
