Campo Dei Fiori is an embroidered cushion built from roughly sixty thousand stitches laid down in no fixed order, wavy lines of different weights running in different directions across the textural ground of Aristotele. Read closely it is a tangle; from a few paces it resolves into an abstract field of flowers, dense at the centre and dissolving towards the edges. Five colours are carried in the stitching and they overlap rather than sit side by side, which is what gives the piece its depth.
Made in Italy. The ground is 47 per cent viscose, 20 per cent cotton, 15 per cent polyester, 14 per cent linen, 2 per cent polyamide and 2 per cent wool; the embroidery is pure viscose. Tested at 20,000 rubs on the Martindale scale, the cushion measures 68 by 90 centimetres. One colourway, 001 Ivory / Orange / Blue, in which warm and cool accents are worked over an undyed ground.
This is the cushion that gives a neutral room its colour, so we put it on a plain linen or wool sofa and let everything else stay quiet. It works beside flat cream, stone and soft blue cushions, and against oak, rush and pale plaster. Sold individually; made to order in Italy, so allow a few weeks.
The motif is directional and set off-centre, so which way up it goes is a real decision; settle it at order stage. Loose, overlapping stitching can snag, so keep it away from buttons and buckles, and lift the pile gently with a soft brush rather than pressing it flat. Made to order in Italy and not returnable, so check the colours against your scheme from a sample.
