DEDAR | Meander 1954

Meander 1954 takes another Anni Albers design and works it as a textural jacquard: a brightly coloured maze that crosses the cloth in angular, rhythmic turns. The ground is largely cotton with a substantial proportion of jute, which gives the weave a dry, slightly coarse body and a matt finish that keeps the colour from ever looking sweet. Because the maze is woven in, the coloured runs stand a little away from the ground, and the pattern is as much felt as seen.

Woven in Italy from 60 per cent cotton, 29 per cent jute and 11 per cent acrylic, 133 centimetres wide, and tested at 20,000 rubs on the Martindale scale. Five colourways: 001 Azure/Turquoise, 002 Red, 003 Kaki, 004 Brown and 005 Blu. Kaki and Brown sit quietly against natural materials; Azure/Turquoise and Red are strong enough to set the palette for a room, and we would use them on one piece rather than several.

We use it on cushions, on the seat and back of a single occasional chair, and on flat blinds where the maze can be read across the whole drop. It belongs with rush, cane, undyed linen and pale plaster rather than with anything polished or reflective. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Jute gives body but very little stretch, so it will not pull round a tight curve: keep it to squarer shapes and tell your upholsterer to expect a stiff cloth. The maze needs squaring to the piece, so allow a full repeat extra per seat and set the pattern out before cutting. Dry clean only, and keep it out of prolonged direct sun.
