This Paradiso Paisley prints the same archive motif, taken from the reverse of a paisley shawl, onto a bulky textural weave rather than a wool satin. The result is quite a different cloth: heavier in the hand, matt, with the print broken up by the irregular surface so the tear-drop forms appear slightly eroded. Viscose carries the depth of colour and linen supplies the dry, uneven body. Where the satin version drapes, this one holds its shape and stands up to being sat on.
Woven and printed in Italy from 70 per cent viscose and 30 per cent linen, tested at 19,000 rubs on the Martindale scale. It is sold as a panel of 138 by 112 centimetres. Five colourways: 001 Argento, 002 Red / Bordeaux, 003 Indigo, 021 Grey and 022 Red / Bordeaux. Argento and Grey are the tonal choices; Indigo and the two Red / Bordeaux options give a room its darkest and richest note.
At panel size we use it for the seat of a small chair or a stool, for a pair of substantial cushions, as a fitted top to an ottoman, or stretched onto a board as a headboard panel between plain uprights. It works against plain wool, oatmeal linen and dark timber. Sold per panel; order a sample before committing.
The panel is a fixed size and the print is placed within it, so decide what the piece is before cutting: an upholsterer will want to centre the motif on a seat, which uses more of the panel than you might expect. Overlock the raw edges straight away, as a bulky weave will shed at the cut. For a pair, cut both from the same panel so the colour matches exactly.
