DEDAR | Pin001 Rouche

Pin001 is a rouche trim: a narrow gathered ruffle, 35 millimetres deep, woven in Italy by Dedar. The gathering is even and fairly close, so the edge reads as a soft fluted band rather than a frill. There is a per cent of elastane in the blend, which lets the tape give slightly as it is worked round a curve and pull back straight on a long run. Against a matt cloth the rayon picks up just enough light to draw the eye along a seam.

It is woven from 96 per cent rayon with 3 per cent polyester and 1 per cent elastane, and finished 3.5 centimetres deep. Made in Italy. One colourway at present, 002 Liquirizia, a deep near-black that behaves like a drawn line: on a pale linen it separates one plane from another, and on a dark cloth it gives a shift in surface rather than in colour.

We use it where an edge wants softening rather than sharpening, so round the border of a scatter cushion, along the leading edge of a curtain to give the fall a little weight, or set just inside the seam of a headboard where the gather breaks up a flat panel. It sits best against plain wools, chenilles and slubby linens, which give the fluting something calm to work against. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it against your cloth.

Rouche is hand-sewn rather than piped: the flat header is stitched down and the gathered edge left standing proud, so your maker wants the trim in hand before the cushion or cover is closed. Measure the full run, add roughly 10 per cent for corners, joins and a finished return at each end, and order in one go so the batch matches. Dedar trims are cut to order and cannot be returned, so confirm the colour from a sample first.
