DEDAR | Pin014 Ribbon

Pin014 is a flat ribbon 45 millimetres wide, woven in Italy in rayon with a little polyester for stability. The face is finely ribbed with a low sheen that shifts as you move past it, and both selvedges are woven clean so it lies flat without turning. It is the width we reach for most often: enough presence to read as a border on a curtain, not so much that it overwhelms a cushion.

Composition is 99 per cent rayon with 1 per cent polyester, finished 4.5 centimetres wide. Made in Italy. One colourway, 001 Marzapane-liquirizia, a two-tone of pale marzipan cream and liquorice black woven together. The contrast is carried inside the ribbon, so it will read from across a room and works hardest when it is the only patterned element on an otherwise plain piece.

We set it up from the hem of full-length curtains as a horizontal band, down the leading edge where a window needs a vertical, and as a single stripe applied to the face of a cushion rather than a border round all four sides. Plain linen, wool and cotton grounds suit it, and it is a useful way of tying a pair of curtains to a black or cream detail already in the room. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it against your cloth.

Applied flat and stitched along both selvedges, with mitred corners where it turns. Mark the line with chalk against a long rule first, and on a pair of curtains check that the band sits at the same height on both. Allow the measured run plus 10 per cent, more where corners are mitred, and order in one length. Dedar trims are cut to order and cannot be returned.
