DEDAR | Pin015 Lipcord

Pin015 is a lipcord with a 1 centimetre cord and a flat flange for setting into a seam. Cotton dominates the blend, which gives the twist a dry matt body, and the rayon in it lifts just the crowns of the twist so the cord reads as a fine spiral rather than a flat line. It is firm enough to keep its section round a corner and soft enough to sew without a specialist foot.

Composition is 54 per cent cotton, 30 per cent rayon and 16 per cent polyester, with a 1 centimetre cord. Made in Italy. One colourway, 001 Marzapane-liquirizia, in which pale cream and near-black are twisted together. The two tones read as a fine barber's spiral close to and as a mid-grey line from across a room, which makes it an unusually forgiving cord to use against either light or dark cloth.

We pipe seat cushions and chair arms with it, run it round the four sides of a scatter cushion, and use it on the leading edge of a curtain when a plain cloth wants a defined vertical. It is at its best on plain linen, wool and velvet, where the spiral is the only detail asking to be looked at. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it against your cloth.

Set into the seam by the flange, so it must reach the upholsterer before the cover goes on. With a two-tone cord the join needs care, since the spiral has to be matched as well as the ends bound; put it at a back corner. Measure the seam, add 15 per cent for joins and corners, and order in one length. Dedar trims are cut to order and cannot be returned.
