DEDAR | Pin018 Lipcord

Pin018 is a lipcord: a fine twisted cord about 7 millimetres in diameter with a flat woven flange running off it, so the whole thing can be caught into a seam and the tape disappears. The cord is firmly twisted and holds its round section under the needle rather than flattening. Rayon and cotton together give it a mixed light, some of the twist catching and some staying matt, which is why it reads as a line rather than a stripe.

Composition is 38 per cent rayon, 33 per cent cotton, 23 per cent acrylic and 6 per cent polyester, with a 0.7 centimetre cord. Made in Italy. Twelve colourways: 001 Marzapane, 002 Liquirizia, 008 Cedro, 009 Paté, 011 Nocciola, 015 Chantilly, 017 Porcellana, 020 Prugna, 021 Bordeaux, 024 Aragosta, 027 Miele and 028 Cognac. Marzapane, Chantilly and Porcellana are the quiet ones; Prugna, Bordeaux and Cedro are where you want the seam to speak.

We specify it most often as piping on upholstery, where it draws the shape of a seat cushion or the arm of a chair, and round the four sides of a scatter cushion. On a curtain it can be set into the leading edge for a crisp vertical. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it against your cloth.

The flange is sewn into the seam, so the trim must be with your upholsterer before the cover goes on, not after. Joins are made on a diagonal with the cords married by hand; corners want a small notch in the flange so the cord turns square. Measure the seam, add 15 per cent for joins and corners, and order in one length. Dedar trims are cut to order and cannot be returned.
