DEDAR | Riptide

Riptide is a cushion whose pattern is a single continuous gesture, as though paint had been poured across the cloth in one movement. It is made with a double Cornely embroidery in fine black lines, into which fourteen metres of a pale trimming with faint metallic hints are worked, all applied to Aristotele, a luminous and textural ground. The start and finish of the applied cord are hidden by hand, so the line genuinely appears to have no beginning, and the surface lifts and drops along its length.

Made in Italy. The ground is 47 per cent viscose, 20 per cent cotton, 15 per cent polyester, 14 per cent linen, 2 per cent polyamide and 2 per cent wool; the applied trimming is 93 per cent cotton, 6 per cent viscose and 1 per cent metallic polyester. Rated at 50,000 rubs on the Martindale scale, the cushion measures 68 by 85 centimetres. Three colourways: 001 Ivory / Black, 002 Ivory / Metal / Black and 003 Ivory.

We use it as the single graphic note on a plain sofa, on a bedroom chair, or paired with a flat wool cushion on a wide bed. It does its best work against calm ground colours, oatmeal, chalk, stone and charcoal. Sold individually; made to order in Italy, so allow a few weeks.

The gesture is directional and deliberately off-centre, so the same panel gives a very different line depending on how it is set: fix the orientation when you order, and if you are taking two, ask for them mirrored rather than identical. The applied cord sits proud, so keep the cushion away from anything that will catch it. Made to order in Italy and not returnable.
