DEDAR | Riptide

Riptide takes a single uninterrupted gesture, the kind a painter makes when the paint is poured rather than brushed, and works it in double embroidery over Aristotele, a luminous and textural cloth picked out with fine white lines. Fourteen metres of trimming are applied by the Cornely technique to draw the line, and the beginning and end of that cord are hidden by hand so the mark appears continuous. Relief and slight mottling along its length keep the surface from ever reading flat.

Made in Italy. The ground is 47 per cent viscose, 20 per cent cotton, 15 per cent polyester, 14 per cent linen, 2 per cent polyamide and 2 per cent wool; the applied trimming is 57 per cent acrylic and 43 per cent polyester. Tested at 20,000 rubs on the Martindale scale, the cushion measures 68 by 85 centimetres. One colourway, 001 Ivory / Black, the black line drawn across an undyed ground.

We use it as the one graphic element on an otherwise plain sofa, on a bedroom chair, or on a bench in a hallway. It wants calm all around it: flat cream, stone and charcoal cushions, oak, plaster and upholstery that is not trying to compete. Sold individually; made to order in Italy, so allow a few weeks.

The gesture is directional and set off-centre, so the panel gives a different line depending on how it is placed and the orientation should be fixed at order stage. The cord stands proud of the cloth and will catch on a buckle or a watch strap, so put it where it is looked at rather than leant on. Made to order in Italy and not returnable.
