Untitled 1941 is an Anni Albers design, woven by Dedar from the artist's original work of that year. From across a room it is a regular grid; come close and the regularity breaks down into something syncopated and hand-made, the intervals shifting slightly and the line weights refusing to repeat. The blend is unusually complex, with wool, silk, jute and linen all present, so the cloth carries several different lights at once and the grid is built from changes in material as much as in colour.
Woven in Italy from 30 per cent polyester, 18 per cent wool, 18 per cent silk, 11 per cent polyamide, 10 per cent cotton, 6 per cent linen, 3 per cent jute and 4 per cent other fibres. It is 130 centimetres wide and rated at 25,000 rubs on the Martindale scale. Five colourways: 001 Linen / Beige / Black, 002 Ivory, 003 Green, 004 Brown / Bronze and 005 Blue. Ivory and Linen / Beige / Black are the ones we reach for most.
We use it on occasional seating, a pair of dining chairs or a small armchair, and it makes handsome flat Roman blinds where the grid can be seen whole. It also covers cushions well. Keep it away from other geometry and pair it with plain wool, oak and plaster. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
The grid must be squared to the piece, which takes more cloth than a plain: allow a full repeat extra per chair and have your upholsterer set the lines out before cutting. For blinds, match the grid across a pair and align the rod pockets to a horizontal line rather than dividing the drop evenly. Dry clean only; silk and jute in the same cloth will not take water.
