Yume is an embroidered cushion in which plump wool ringlets rise out of a silk bourette ground, the cloth Dedar call Topinambour. The embroidery is worked from the back in ringlet stitch, which produces loops rather than flat strokes, so the motif has real volume and a soft, almost fleecy hand. The pleasure of it is the contrast: a dark, irregular, slubby ground under a mass of matt ivory wool, one rough and one yielding, with nothing in the way of pattern to read beyond the shapes themselves.

Made in Italy. The ground is 92 per cent viscose and 8 per cent silk; the embroidery is pure wool. The cushion measures 68 by 90 centimetres. Two colourways: 001 Ivory, where the loops sit close in tone to the cloth, and 002 Black / Ivory, where an almost black ground throws the wool forward. The second is much the bolder of the two and needs a plain room around it.

We use it on a linen or wool sofa, on a bedroom chair, and at the head of a bed where the loops will actually be touched. It sits happily with boucle, flat wool and undyed linen, and badly with anything else textured at the same scale. Sold individually; made to order in Italy, so allow a few weeks.

The motif is directional and may be placed upright or turned, so agree the orientation when the order goes in. Looped wool should be lifted and shaken rather than brushed, and a pulled loop wants easing back with a needle rather than being cut. It is a decorative cushion, not a daily leaning one. Made to order in Italy and not returnable, so check the colourway against your cloth first.
