Arlo is one of the small, single-colour prints in George & Minnie's Minnie Prints collection, a compact hand-drawn motif printed on a cotton ground in a close, even rhythm. With a 14 centimetre repeat it is a proper small print: from a few paces away it settles into a fine, even texture, and only when you are next to it do the individual marks show. It is the print in this group that behaves most like a plain, which is why it comes in so many colours.
The cloth is 100 per cent cotton, 137 centimetres wide, with a 14 centimetre vertical and 27.5 centimetre horizontal repeat, and the mill rates it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. There are 10 colourways in all; Barley and Blush are the pale, near-neutral ones, Terracotta and Daffodil the warm ones, Periwinkle and Aqua the fresh blues, and Ink the one with the most contrast against the ground.
We tend to use Arlo as the quiet cloth in a room full of George & Minnie prints: on a loose-covered armchair beside Watercolour Bird curtains, on a bedspread under a Wild Meadow headboard, as a set of bathroom blinds, or as the lining and leading edge of curtains made in a big floral. In a single colour with a matching Checkmate it makes a whole bedroom on its own. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
A small print is economical to cut and quick to match, but keep the direction consistent on every piece, as the marks have a subtle up and down. For curtains, a plain cotton lining is all it needs; add an interlining for a fuller fold. The cotton takes the sharp folds of a roman blind well, and if the piece will ever be washed, have the cloth pre-shrunk or dry cleaned before it is made up.
