Canvas is the quiet one in George & Minnie's Minnie Prints wallpapers: a small, all-over texture that mimics the weave of a plain canvas cloth, printed in one colour on a non-woven ground. Up close you see the crosshatch of the weave; from across the room it reads as a soft, slightly uneven plain with more depth than paint. It is the paper we reach for when a room needs colour on the walls and the other patterns in the scheme need something calm to sit against.
It is 100 per cent non-woven, 52 centimetres wide, with a 12 centimetre vertical repeat, which is small enough to waste very little when matching. There are 15 colourways in all, from pale neutrals such as Chalk and Barley through soft colour like Sage and Soft Blue to deeper, warmer shades such as Ochre and Walnut, so there is nearly always one to pick up from a companion print.
We use Canvas above a dado with a Minnie print below it, or on all four walls of a bedroom with Ditsy or Strawberry Tea on a single wall behind the bed. It is also a straightforward way to line the back of bookshelves or the inside of a cupboard in one of the stronger shades, and it makes a good ceiling colour in a room papered in a busier design. As a non-woven it is hung paste-the-wall, which makes it one of the easier papers to hang yourself: paste the wall, hang the dry lengths, butt the joins and wipe any paste from the surface before it dries. The 12 centimetre repeat means the texture matches almost anywhere, so cutting is economical. As a rough guide, a 4 metre wall at standard ceiling height takes around 3 rolls; measure up before ordering and buy from one batch.
