Checkers is the drawn check in George & Minnie's Minnie Prints Wallpapers: a small check in two colours, with the slight wobble of a pattern drawn by hand rather than set by a loom, on a pale ground. It gives a room the warmth of a checked cloth without the bulk of it, and it has the knack of making a plain box of a room feel furnished before any furniture arrives.
It is printed on a 100 per cent non-woven backing, 52 centimetres wide, with a vertical repeat of 50 centimetres, which tells you the check is not a mechanical one; the hand-drawn variation cycles every half metre. There are seven colourways: Teal/Tomato, Daffodil/Walnut, Periwinkle/Raspberry, Emerald, Emerald/Tomato, Periwinkle and Walnut. The single colours are the easy ones to live with; the two-colour pairings have more character and suit a room with less in it.
We would put it in a small bathroom, a downstairs loo or a boxroom bedroom, where a big print would overwhelm, and it is one of the better papers for the inside of a fitted cupboard or the back of a bookcase. Non-woven papers are normally hung paste-the-wall, so lining paper is only needed on a poor surface; check the label for the match type. The roll is 52 centimetres wide; assuming the usual 10 metre length, a 2.4 metre high wall gives three drops per roll after the 50 centimetre repeat is allowed for, so a wall 3.5 metres long takes seven drops and three rolls. Keep the check level with a plumb line on the first drop, because the eye catches any lean in a grid immediately.
