Checkmate wallpaper is George & Minnie's gingham on the wall: a small check printed in one colour on a non-woven ground, drawn to keep the softened quality of a woven gingham rather than the flat grid of a ruled one. The 26 centimetre repeat keeps the check small and steady, and it does for a wall what the fabric does for a room, which is to give everything else something calm to sit against.
It is 100 per cent non-woven, 52 centimetres wide, with a 26 centimetre vertical repeat. There are 6 colourways: Barley, Parchment, Ink, Chalky Blue, Sage and Daffodil. Barley and Parchment are the quiet neutrals; Chalky Blue and Sage are the soft cottage colours; Daffodil is the sunny one, and Ink has the most contrast and works well in a hall or a cloakroom. The same check is woven as a cotton fabric in the Checks & Stripes collection.
We use Checkmate paper in kitchens and boot rooms, on the walls of a bathroom above panelling, on all four walls of a small bedroom with a Volume One floral at the window, and inside cupboards and cabinets, where a little check is a pleasant surprise. It also makes a good ceiling in a nursery with Twinkle Twinkle on the walls. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.
It is paste-the-wall: paste the wall, hang the dry lengths and butt the joins, and it strips dry. Take extra care to hang the first drop plumb, because a check shows a wall that is out of true far more than a floral does, and allow for the 26 centimetre repeat when cutting. As a rough guide, a 4 metre wall at standard ceiling height takes around 3 rolls; measure carefully and order from one batch so the shade is even.
