George & Minnie | Ditsy

Ditsy is the tiny floral in George & Minnie's Minnie Prints collection: a sprig so small it is more texture than picture, printed in two colours on a linen and cotton ground. The name is the old dressmaker's word for a small scattered print, and that is exactly what it is. It gives a piece of furniture a soft, freckled surface, and it is the print in the collection that people fall for once they have handled it.

The cloth is 55 per cent linen and 45 per cent cotton, 137 centimetres wide, with a very small repeat of 5.5 centimetres vertically and 9 centimetres horizontally. The supplier rates it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. There are seven colourways: Aqua/Blush, Daffodil/Emerald, Denim/Daffodil, Blush/Emerald, Aqua/Sage, Periwinkle/Forest and Grass/Parchment. Each pairs two colours, so pick by the one you want to dominate; the second reads as a fleck.

We use it on cushions, on the seats and backs of bedroom chairs, on Roman blinds in a bathroom or a child's room, and it makes a lovely lining for a curtain in one of the bigger Volume One florals. On a small sofa in a cottage sitting room it is charming. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

With a repeat this small there is almost no waste, so buy to the finished measurements plus the usual allowances, and do not worry about matching across seams; the eye cannot find a join in a print like this. Line curtains and blinds so the pattern is not shadowed by the light behind it, and have the finished pieces dry cleaned, as the composition is not suited to washing. On upholstery it wears well and hides marks.
