Indienne Tree is the wallpaper version of one of the big designs in George & Minnie's Wallpaper Volume One: a flowering tree in the Indienne tradition, the branching, blossom-laden motif that came to Europe on painted cottons from the East and has been redrawn by every generation since. This one is drawn afresh in the brand's London studio with a lighter, more playful hand than the archive originals, and it gives a room a proper sense of occasion.
The paper is printed on a 100 per cent non-woven backing, 52 centimetres wide, with a 57 centimetre vertical repeat. There are six colourways: Emerald/Periwinkle, Raspberry/Emerald, Periwinkle, Emerald, Walnut and Parchment. The two-colour versions carry the most colour and suit a room you want to feel dressed; Parchment and Walnut are gentler and let the drawing do the talking.
We would hang it in a dining room or a guest bedroom, floor to ceiling on every wall, with the woodwork painted to pick up one of the darker tones in the print and plain linen at the windows. In a smaller house it works well in a hall, where you pass through it rather than sit with it. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.
Non-woven papers are usually hung paste-the-wall, which makes this an easier hang than a traditional paper, though check the label for the match type. The roll is 52 centimetres wide; assuming the usual 10 metre length, a 2.4 metre high wall gives you three drops per roll once the 57 centimetre repeat is allowed for, so a wall 3.5 metres long needs seven drops and three rolls. Buy a spare roll from the same batch, and centre the first drop on the chimney breast or the wall you see first.
