George & Minnie | Loom Stripe

Loom Stripe is the narrow stripe in George & Minnie's Minnie Prints collection, a fine, slightly irregular stripe printed on a linen and cotton union cloth so that it looks like a woven ticking drawn by hand. The 7 centimetre horizontal repeat keeps the stripe small, and in the two-colour versions the stripe picks up both shades, so the cloth has a soft, blended look from a distance and a definite rhythm up close.

The cloth is 55 per cent linen and 45 per cent cotton, 137 centimetres wide, with a 7 centimetre horizontal repeat, and the mill rates it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. There are 5 colourways: Grass/Aqua, Ochre/Walnut, Denim, Emerald/Raspberry and Aqua/Coral. Denim is the single-colour one that behaves like a ticking; Ochre/Walnut is the warm, autumnal one; Grass/Aqua and Aqua/Coral are seaside fresh, and Emerald/Raspberry is the one with the most snap.

We tend to use Loom Stripe for a set of kitchen chair seats, a boxed window seat cushion, roman blinds in a bathroom, or as the contrast lining and leading edge on curtains made in a Volume One floral. It is also good on the underside of a bedspread, so the stripe shows when the corner is turned down. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

The stripe runs down the roll, so for curtains and blinds it falls vertically as you would expect; for a long window seat or a headboard it can be railroaded to run the stripe horizontally with no join, which is worth discussing with your upholsterer. Keep the stripe dead straight on every piece, because a stripe shows any drift more than a print does. Line curtains with a cotton sateen to protect the linen.
