Offset is one of the small-scale prints in George & Minnie's Minnie Prints collection: a simple hand-drawn mark repeated in a staggered arrangement, so the motifs step across the cloth rather than lining up in rows. On a cotton ground it reads as a small allover pattern from across the room and shows its hand up close. It is the kind of print that makes a room feel put together without anyone being able to say quite why.
The cloth is 100 per cent cotton, 136 centimetres wide, with a 24 centimetre vertical repeat and a 17 centimetre horizontal one. The supplier rates it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. There are eight colourways, each a single colour on a pale ground: Barley, Walnut, Tomato, Periwinkle, Ink, Sage, Forest and Daffodil. Because it is one colour, it takes its lead from whatever it sits next to.
We use it on the smaller pieces that need pattern but not a statement: a pair of cushions, the seat of a dining chair, a Roman blind in a bathroom, a lampshade. It is also a very useful lining for a curtain in one of the Volume One florals, picked in the same colour, so the back of the curtain has something to say. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
The repeat is small, so allow one extra 24 centimetre repeat per drop for curtains and you will have all the matching room you need; check with your workroom whether the staggered layout is a half-drop match, as that affects how widths are joined. For chair seats, cut every seat from the same point in the repeat so a row of chairs looks like a set. Line curtains, and dry clean only.
