George & Minnie | Puzzlewood

Puzzlewood is the woodland print in George & Minnie's Volume One, named after the tangled ancient wood in the Forest of Dean and drawn in the brand's London studio as a wandering pattern of branches and leaves that knits together across the cloth. Printed in one colour on a linen and cotton ground, it is busy in line and calm in colour, so it can go on a large piece without taking over a room.

The cloth is 55 per cent linen and 45 per cent cotton, 138 centimetres wide, with a 69 centimetre vertical repeat and a 46 centimetre horizontal one. The supplier rates it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. There are four colourways: Aqua, Blush, Periwinkle and Emerald, each on a pale ground. Emerald is the most woodland of the four; Blush is the most unexpected and very pretty in a bedroom.

We would put it on curtains in a bedroom with the matching Puzzlewood wallpaper on the walls for a properly enveloping room, or on a single armchair and a pair of cushions in a sitting room that is otherwise plain. It also makes a good bedspread, where the whole drawing lies flat and can be seen. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

The vertical repeat is 69 centimetres, so allow a full repeat extra per drop and expect some waste; have your curtain maker check the match type before cutting widths. The linen and cotton mix hangs well and creases less than pure linen, but it still wants a lining and, for full-length curtains, an interlining. For upholstery, centre a clear part of the drawing on the seat, and keep the busiest tangle for the outside back.
