Ribbon Tape is the trimming that goes with George & Minnie's Checks & Stripes collection: a flat woven cotton tape, 5 centimetres wide, made in the same 11 colours as the checks, stripes and tickings so that everything can be matched or deliberately mismatched. It has a firm, slightly dry hand and a clean edge, and it does the job a good tape should do: it draws a line around a piece and finishes it.
The tape is 100 per cent cotton and 5 centimetres wide, and the colourways are Barley, Walnut, Blush, Terracotta, Raspberry, Periwinkle, Ink, Chalky Blue, Emerald, Sage and Daffodil. They are dyed to the same references as the fabric collection, so a Periwinkle tape on a Periwinkle Ribbon Stripe will sit tone on tone, while a Raspberry tape on a Sage check gives you the contrast border that the George & Minnie look is built on.
We use it most often down the leading edge of a pair of plain linen curtains, set back a few centimetres from the edge, as a border on a Roman blind, and around the edge of a cushion in place of piping. It is also useful for framing a bed valance or the hem of a tablecloth. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to check the colour against your cloth.
Measure the run and add 10 per cent for corners and joins; a tape this wide needs to be mitred at corners rather than folded, and it should be stitched down both edges so it lies flat after cleaning. As it is cotton, have the finished piece dry cleaned rather than washed, and if you are applying it to a washable cloth, treat the whole thing as dry clean only once the tape is on.
