Ripple is one of the small-scale prints in George & Minnie's Minnie Prints collection, a small rippling mark printed in a single colour on a pale cotton ground. The lines are drawn rather than ruled, so they shimmer a little as they run down the cloth, and from a few paces away the whole thing settles into a soft, textured semi-plain. It is the sort of print we use to give a scheme quiet movement rather than a motif you can point at.
The cloth is 100 per cent cotton, 137 centimetres wide, and the mill rates it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. It comes in 7 colourways: Barley, Coral, Blush, Soft Blue, Ink, Aqua and Emerald. The pale ones, Barley and Blush, work almost as neutrals; Soft Blue and Aqua are fresh without being cold, and Ink and Emerald have enough weight to hold their own against a big floral.
We tend to use Ripple where a plain would be dull but a print would be too much: unlined curtains in a bathroom, the inside of a four-poster or a set of bed hangings, a bedspread with a deep border of the same cloth, or a loose cover on a bedroom armchair. It sits easily under the larger Volume One prints, and two Minnie Prints together on a bed, say Ripple and Strawberry Tea, is very George & Minnie. As a small print it is forgiving to cut and match, but do keep the lines running the same way on every piece and confirm the direction before the workroom starts. For curtains, a plain cotton lining is enough; add a bump interlining if you want a fuller fold. The cotton takes the crisp pleats of a roman blind well, and at 137 centimetres a blind usually needs no join up to a window around 120 centimetres wide.
