George & Minnie | Rosie

Rosie is one of the statement florals in George & Minnie's Volume One: a printed linen with a rambling rose drawn by hand in the brand's London studio, loose enough to feel painted rather than pinned down. The scale is generous without being grand, so it holds its own across a wide run of curtain and still makes sense on a single chair. Its charm is that it looks as if it has always been there.

It is 100 per cent linen, 138 centimetres wide, with a 46 centimetre repeat both vertically and horizontally. The supplier rates it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. There are five colourways: Blush/Sage, Daffodil, Raspberry/Teal, Emerald and Walnut. The two-colour versions are the livelier ones; Walnut and Emerald are quieter and read almost as a single tone from across a room.

We would put it on a pair of full-length curtains in a bedroom, with Minnie Check or Ribbon Stripe on the headboard so the two patterns talk to each other, or use it on the inside of a bed canopy where you see it lying down. In a sitting room it makes a good loose cover for a small armchair. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Allow one extra repeat per drop when you measure for curtains, and ask your curtain maker to check whether the design is a straight or half-drop match before cutting, because it affects how the widths are joined. Linen moves with the seasons, so we always line and interline curtains in this cloth, and we let the hems hang for a week before the final press. For upholstery, centre a rose on the seat and the inside back.
