George & Minnie | Secret Garden

Secret Garden is one of the florals in George & Minnie's Volume One: a drawn garden of flowers and foliage printed on cotton, with the loose, slightly overgrown quality of a border that has been left to get on with it. It was drawn in the brand's London studio and has a lighter touch than the archive florals it nods to. At a 48 centimetre repeat it is a mid-scale design, big enough for curtains and small enough for a chair.

The cloth is 100 per cent cotton, 138 centimetres wide, with a 48 centimetre vertical repeat and a 46 centimetre horizontal one. The supplier rates it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. There are four colourways: Forest, Grass, Denim and Aqua/Sage. Three are single colours on a pale ground, which keeps the garden calm; Aqua/Sage is the softer, two-tone version and the one we would use where the light is strong.

We would use it on a pair of curtains in a bedroom with the walls in a plain colour picked from the print, on a loose-covered armchair in a sitting room, or on a set of cushions on a window seat with a George Ticking bolster in the same colour. It also makes a good blind in a kitchen with painted cupboards. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Allow one extra 48 centimetre repeat per drop when measuring for curtains, and ask your curtain maker to confirm whether the design is a straight or half-drop match before the widths are joined. Cotton takes a print crisply but it will fade in direct sun, so line the curtains and, in a south-facing room, consider a blackout lining or a blind behind them. For chair seats, cut each one from the same point in the repeat.
