George & Minnie | Squiggle Check

Squiggle Check is George & Minnie's woven check with a sense of humour: the lines that make up the grid wobble as if they had been drawn freehand rather than ruled, so a familiar cottage check loosens up and stops looking so tidy. It is a woven cotton with a soft, dry hand, and the 28 by 27 centimetre repeat gives a check big enough to notice from the doorway without taking over a small room.

The cloth is 100 per cent cotton, 137 centimetres wide, with a 28 centimetre vertical and 27 centimetre horizontal repeat. The mill rates it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. There are 5 colourways: Ink/Tomato, Walnut/Ochre, Forest/Aqua, Coral and Berry. The two-colour versions are the livelier ones, and the single colours, Coral and Berry, are easier to slot into a room that already has a floral in it.

We tend to put Squiggle Check on things that get handled: a loose cover for a bedroom chair, a boxed seat cushion on a kitchen bench, or a pair of unlined curtains in a child's room where the wobble earns a smile every morning. It pairs well with the bigger Volume One prints such as Wild Meadow and Minnie's Garden, sharing their colours without competing for attention. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Treat it as a patterned cloth when making up, not a plain, and match the check across seams and drops; allow one extra repeat, about 28 centimetres, per drop when calculating curtains. For loose covers, ask your upholsterer to centre a full square on the seat and keep the check upright on the back so the wobble reads as deliberate. Being cotton, it is worth having the cloth pre-shrunk or dry cleaned before cutting if the piece will ever be cleaned.
