Squiggle Check is exactly what it says: a check drawn with a wobbling, wandering line instead of a straight one, from George & Minnie's Wallpaper Volume One. It has the structure of a grid and none of the stiffness, so a room papered in it feels ordered and cheerful at the same time. From the far side of the room it reads as a soft check; up close you see the hand that drew it.
It is printed on a 100 per cent non-woven backing, 52 centimetres wide, with a short vertical repeat of 24.5 centimetres, which keeps the waste down. There are five colourways: Ink/Tomato, Walnut/Ochre, Forest/Aqua, Barley and Parchment. The two-colour versions have the most personality and suit a room that is otherwise plain; Barley and Parchment are the gentle ones and work almost as a textured neutral.
We tend to use it in the rooms that need cheering up rather than impressing: a child's bedroom, a boot room, a kitchen with plenty of wall and not much else. It is also a good foil for a big print, so we might hang Rosie or Minnie's Garden on one wall and Squiggle Check on the other three in a matching colour. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.
Non-woven papers are normally hung paste-the-wall, so it goes up quickly; check the label for the match type. The roll is 52 centimetres wide; assuming the usual 10 metre length, a 2.4 metre high wall gives three drops per roll with the 24.5 centimetre repeat allowed for, so a 3.5 metre wall needs seven drops and three rolls. Because the lines wobble on purpose, small mismatches at the seams forgive themselves, but do still hang the first drop to a plumb line.
