Wild Meadow is the meadow print from George & Minnie's Volume One collection, a tangle of grasses, seed heads and open flowers drawn in one colour and printed on a linen and cotton union cloth. The repeat is a tall 72 centimetres, so the stems have room to grow the full height of a curtain drop rather than stopping and starting. Because it is one colour on a pale ground, it has the airiness of a toile with a looser, more modern hand.
The cloth is 55 per cent linen and 45 per cent cotton, 137 centimetres wide, with a 72 centimetre vertical and 68.5 centimetre horizontal repeat, and the mill rates it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. There are 8 colourways in all; Barley and Blush are the quiet ones, Terracotta is warm and earthy, Periwinkle and Aqua bring a fresh note, and Emerald is the deepest and greenest of the group. The same design is available as a wallpaper.
We would use Wild Meadow for a pair of full-length curtains in a bedroom or a garden room, for a headboard, or for a loose cover on a small sofa where the tall repeat can be seen at full stretch. It sits comfortably next to a woven check such as George Check or Checkmate in a matching colour, and next to its own wallpaper in a bedroom if you like a wrapped room. Allow one extra repeat, 72 centimetres, per drop when calculating curtains, and match across widths so the stems run through. On a headboard or a sofa, ask for the motif to be centred and the direction kept upright; this is not a cloth to railroad. Line curtains with a cotton sateen or add a bump interlining to give the union cloth body and to keep the sun off the linen.
