Aldbury Stripe is a woven stripe with ornament inside the bands: the lines are not plain but filled with a small figured detail, which gives it far more interest than a simple ticking. Linen and cotton make the ground, while the viscose lifts the pattern and adds a quiet sheen where the light catches it. The cloth has a soft, dressed handle. It is a stripe with manners: ordered enough for a formal room and soft enough for a bedroom.
Thirty-eight per cent linen, 36 per cent cotton, 19 per cent viscose and 7 per cent polyester, 138 centimetres wide, repeating 38 centimetres vertically and 34.5 centimetres horizontally. GP & J Baker list it for curtains and bedspreads. Four colourways: Parchment, Blue, Green and Ochre. Parchment is the neutral that will sit behind anything, Ochre is warm enough to carry a north-facing room, and Blue and Green both work with the Canton prints.
We use it for curtains, where the stripe gathers well, and for a bedspread or the skirt of a bed. It is a good cloth for a lined curtain in a hall or on a landing, and for cushions when a room needs a stripe rather than another flower. Pair it with a plain linen and one print. Because the stripe carries a vertical repeat as well as a horizontal one, both need matching: allow a full repeat per drop and match the bands across every seam. Decide which stripe falls on the leading edge and mirror it on the second curtain. Interline for weight, as the viscose content drapes better with something behind it.
