GP & J Baker | Alveston

Alveston is an Essential Weaves design with acrylic and a little polyamide alongside cotton, viscose and linen, a blend chosen for softness and resilience together. There is no meaningful repeat, so it reads as a flat, even ground rather than a texture, in a single clear teal colourway that is confident enough to carry a room without needing a pattern alongside it, and strong enough in tone to read well even in a large, light-filled space.

Composition is 58 per cent cotton, 28 per cent viscose, 7 per cent linen, 6 per cent acrylic and 1 per cent nylon. It is 140 centimetres wide, tested to 35,000 rubs on the Martindale, which is comfortably rated for upholstery, and GP & J Baker specify it for curtains and both loose and fixed upholstery. There is one colourway, Teal.

We use Alveston on a sofa or a pair of dining chairs where a clear, confident colour is wanted, and equally as curtains in the same room to carry the colour through. It suits a scheme with a lot of white or pale timber, where the teal reads as the main event rather than an accent, and a window seat covered in it makes a strong, simple statement against a plain wall. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

At 35,000 rubs Alveston is genuinely upholstery grade and will take daily use. There is no pattern to match, so order on drop and width; for curtains, line as usual. Ask your upholsterer about railroading on a wide sofa run given the 140 centimetre width, and order all cloth for one piece from the same batch.
