GP & J Baker | Apsley

Apsley is the small-scale print in the Winslow collection, a companion to the embroideries rather than an embroidery itself: a neat, two-colour repeat printed on a cotton-linen ground. At 20 by 27.5 centimetres the repeat is tight, so it reads as a texture from across the room and gives the larger stitched designs something almost plain to sit against. It is the cloth we use to calm a scheme down. The print has a slightly soft edge that suits it to old houses and to rooms with a lot of natural light.

The composition is 60 per cent cotton and 40 per cent linen, a crisp, medium-weight printing ground with a little more body than pure linen. It is 137 centimetres wide with a 20 centimetre vertical and 27.5 centimetre horizontal repeat, and it is specified for curtains and bedspreads. One colourway, Green/Blue, a leaf green and a soft blue on natural, chosen to pair with the greens and blues that run through the collection.

We use it for roman blinds, for bedroom curtains where the bed is dressed in a bigger pattern, for cushions and for a bedspread border. It is also a good fabric for a lampshade or a screen. Pair with Rosa, Meadow Trellis or Woodland Trail, or with plain linens in either colour. In a nursery it is one of the easiest fabrics in the collection to live with, because the small repeat forgives a crowded room. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

The small repeat wastes little; allow 20 centimetres per drop. Line curtains and blinds, and interline curtains for body. It is not rated for seating, so on a chair it is a cushion rather than the cover. Dry clean only.
