Arundel is one of seven designs in GP & J Baker's Portobello collection, a range built around a quietly elegant take on relaxed country living. It is a printed floral on a linen-rich ground, with a generous 77 by 63.5 centimetre repeat that gives the pattern room to unfurl across a proper width of curtain rather than crowding a small one, and the single soft blue colourway keeps it easy to place against most walls and woodwork.
Composition is 75 per cent linen, 19 per cent viscose and 6 per cent polyester. It is 127 centimetres wide, with a 77 centimetre vertical and 63.5 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker specify it for curtains. There is one colourway, Blue, a soft, mid-tone that reads calm rather than saturated.
We use Arundel for full-length curtains in a sitting room or bedroom, where the generous repeat has space to read properly, and it suits a house that wants pattern without formality. It also makes a comfortable bedspread, and a single width used as a headboard panel gives an otherwise plain room some real character. In a guest room it is often the one piece of pattern in an otherwise plain scheme, which keeps the room calm but not flat. Pair it with a plain linen in the same blue or a small stitched geometric. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
Allow a full 77 centimetre repeat per drop and match carefully across widths so the print continues unbroken at the seams. Line and interline curtains for a good fall and to protect the print from strong sun. There is no published rub count, so keep Arundel to curtains rather than upholstery, and order all your cloth from one batch for a consistent print colour.
