Ashmore Stripe takes the painterly hand of the wider Ashmore collection and turns it into a band: a hand-drawn stripe printed with a fine, broken texture rather than a flat line, so it keeps the softness of the collection's florals even without a flower in sight. The 20 centimetre horizontal repeat gives an even, generous rhythm across a width of cloth, and up close the stripe has a slightly irregular, brushed edge.
The cloth is 80 per cent linen, 14 per cent viscose, 4 per cent cotton and 2 per cent acrylic, which keeps the linen's dry matte hand while adding a little more colour depth. It is 140 centimetres wide with a 20 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker specify it for curtains and bedspreads. Six colourways: Linen, Parchment, Red, Blue, Aqua and Green. Linen and Parchment are the quiet neutrals; Red and Aqua are the two we reach for first when a room needs colour.
We use it for curtains where a plain would be too flat and a floral too much, and it makes a clean, tailored bedspread with a simple flat border. A run of it on a window seat cushion is an easy way to bring a stripe into a room without committing a whole wall of curtain to it. Keep the stripe level: ask your maker to cut on the straight grain and check the repeat is matched at every seam, since a stripe shows any drift more than a floral would. Allow a little extra for railroading if you are using it on a wide window. Line curtains, and interline in a bedroom where the light is strong. It is not specified for upholstery, so keep it to windows, beds and cushions.
