Aylsham is the smallest-scale embroidery in Winslow: a neat, repeating stitched motif on a cotton-linen ground with a 20 by 15 centimetre repeat. It is the design that does the quiet work in a scheme, the one you put on the chair cushion, the blind or the bedspread border so the larger florals have something calm to sit against. The stitch is worked in one colour and sits slightly proud, so it reads as a woven texture from across the room.

The composition is 61 per cent cotton, 21 per cent linen and 18 per cent polyester embroidery thread. It is 135 centimetres wide with a 20 centimetre vertical and 15 centimetre horizontal repeat, and it is specified for curtains and bedspreads. Two colourways, Green and Rose, both on a natural ground. Green is a fresh leaf tone that pairs with almost everything in the collection; Rose is warmer and suits a bedroom.

We use it for roman blinds, for the inside of a curtain leading edge, for cushions and for a bedspread border. In a child's room it makes an easy pair of curtains. It pairs naturally with Rosa, Meadow Trellis and Woodland Trail from the same collection, and with plain linens in the same tones. It is also our first choice for lining the inside of a wardrobe or a cupboard door panel. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

The small repeat wastes little; allow 20 centimetres per drop for matching. Line curtains and blinds; interlining is optional on a blind but helps a curtain hang well. It is not rated for seating, so on a chair it is a loose cushion rather than the cover. Blinds want a firm lining so the small stitch reads crisply.
