Baker House Boucle is the textured companion to Baker House Linen: a looped, nubbly weave with a soft, uneven surface that reads as knit as much as woven cloth. There is no pattern to match, since the interest is entirely in the texture, and the loops give it a warmth and depth that a flat plain cannot match.
The composition is 45 per cent linen, 26 per cent wool, 26 per cent acetate and 3 per cent polyamide, a mix that gives the boucle its characteristic springy loop and a little natural sheen from the acetate. It is 137 centimetres wide and rated at 50,000 rubs on the Martindale test, so it is rated for upholstery as well as curtains. GP & J Baker specify it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Twelve colourways, from Taupe, Parchment and Oatmeal through Nutmeg and Plaster to Marine, Indigo, Sage, Ochre, Dove, Slate and Charcoal.
We use it for upholstery on an armchair or a sofa where texture is doing the work a pattern usually would, and it is one of our first choices for a piece that needs to feel tactile rather than smart. Marine or Charcoal give a chair real presence; the paler neutrals are easier across a large sofa. Pair with a plain linen or one of the house prints for contrast. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
With no repeat, there is nothing to match across widths, though a boucle should always be cut with the loop running the same way on every piece so the light catches it consistently. Line and interline curtains for weight. For upholstery, ask your maker to check the loop does not catch on zips or piping during making up, and railroad where the piece allows it.
